Sabrina Kay: creating the next generation of designers
Interviewed
by Martha Singer and Harlan Boll
I originally met with Sabrina Kay to interview her
(that interview will appear in the Business section
of our November / December issue). But upon
meeting her, I sensed we had other plans to fulfill
together first.
Entering
her boardroom, I saw laid out before me a double--clothed
table, two sets of glasses - one water, one champagne
-small silver pickle forks, pearl spoons for the caviar
that filled a beautiful glass dish that sat upon a
tray with an arrangement of crackers, small pickles,
and other wonders to partake in during our visit.
Just as
I was adjusting to being treated like royalty, my
attention was captured by this gently moving porcelain-skinned
beauty with flowing dark hair, wearing an original
designer suit, and speaking to me in a soft and giving
voice, which subtly suggested both of her countries
Korea and America. "Please forgive me for being late,
I hope you didn't have to wait long. Sit down and
make yourself comfortable," were Ms. Kay's first words
to me.
Within
the next few moments I learned that the champagne
was there because someone had sent it for her birthday.
Which birthday, no lady would ever tell, nor would
she partake of champagne in the middle of her work
day; she'd set it out in case I wanted some.
Such is
the lady who will be writing the women's fashion column
starting with our next issue ('our other plans').
Ms. Kay's column will help you learn designers' secrets
on how to dress well by understanding the affects
of color and shape. Over time, you will learn how
to build your own custom wardrobe.
Ms. Kay
grew up amid her parents' retail clothing business,
but when she envisioned a different path for herself,
her parents gladly supported her plans and dreams.
It didn't take long for her to realize that the fashion
college she was attending was behind the times, so
she decided to work on starting her own.
Since 1991,
when Ms. Kay opened the way for creating future designers
at the California Design College, it has flourished.
The college presently has over 600 students enrolled.
Their setup and equipment are beyond the 21st
Century.
Computers
and 3-D animation are the backbone of the school,
and the curriculum covers everything from fashion
history to how to market yourself and your wares.
Ms. Kay pays attention to all the details, no matter
what form they may take.
We are
thrilled that she'll be taking time from her outrageously
busy schedule to help us develop a very special fashion
section.
In a recent conversation with Harlan Boll, Sabrina
Kay shared her thoughts about designers and the future
of fashion. We thought this would be a good way to
introduce her to our readers.
