We live in a very image-conscious world. The clothes we wear affect our self-image, our mood, and how we are perceived by others. Our attire on a particular day can be the deciding factor in how we perform, whether we are seeking a new job or that promotion, or even how we are treated at our favorite restaurant. What we wear will be a reflection of the world we live in and also the world we want to live in. So here are some examples of how to dress to increase your success in life. Today, most of us work in a relaxed environment where casual dress is common. Casual does not, however, mean sloppy. You may be allowed to wear khakis and knit shirts rather than suits and ties, but your appearance must still be neat. Your clothes should be clean and pressed. Long-sleeved shirts and blouses are usually more appropriate than sleeveless or halter tops in the office. Always wear socks or stockings with appropriate shoes. Sweaters and vests are an excellent way to polish your outfit. How should you dress for the interview for that perfect job? Remember, you only get one chance to make a first impression. Do not take a chance on fashion—go with classic business suits. Women should wear a feminine suit with a conservative cut and longer jacket and shirt length. The color should flatter you but still be conservative, such as mahogany, dark plum or deep maroon. Men should wear a medium to dark gray suit, white dress shirt, regimental striped tie, and black lace-up shoes. A business suit will let the interviewer know that you understand and respect business traditions and that you will be a responsible addition to the staff. When you are seeking a promotion, you need to dress as the person you are going to be, not who you were. Take your cues from upper management. If you want to join that club, you must look the part. Make notes, if you have to, about how they match shirts and suits. Adopt that style as your own. In most companies, upper management's attire is a reflection of the company's philosophy and image. The dress for a fashion executive may be more trendy than that of a bank executive. Promotions come to those who reflect the philosophy and can be pointed to as a model of the company. Finally, let's say you want to get a good table at your favorite upscale restaurant. Being a big-spending regular helps, but just as important is the impression you make. Know the dress code. Many restaurants on the Westside have a smart casual dress code. In that case, women should wear a fashionable pantsuit or a dress. Men should add a sports coat to finish their look. If the dress code is suit and tie, then wear your best. When you look the part, you can confidently ask for the best table in a restaurant and the maitre d' will feel good about giving it to you. Although we've focused on the fact that the right clothes make a good first impression, confidence and self-esteem are always the keys to long-term success. Remember, feeling good about the way we look makes us feel good about ourselves, which, in turn, breeds confidence. Confidence is the body language that says "I am the one to hire or promote." Dress well with confidence, and success will come your way.
